Five reasons to take a Conformal Coating Support Contract with SCH

  1. You get full technical support on all of your conformal coating issues from experts in the industry whenever you need it without employing an expert full time.
  2. You get access to a range of expertise available across the different areas of conformal coating including cleaning, circuit reliability, liquid conformal coatings, application technologies and parylene
  3. You don’t need to keep up with the current trends in conformal coating technology. We do it for you.
  4. We have experts working in North America, Asia and Europe providing international support.
  5. If you don’t use the service at all in the 12 months you get another 12 months free!

When problems occur in conformal coating they can be highly costly.

SO PREVENT THESE COSTS NOW

With an Conformal coating Material SelectionSCH Support Package in place you can get valuable advice on the problems that may be occuring and more importantly why they are occurring in ALL AREAS OF THE PROCESS regardless of whose material, equipment or process is in operation.

What is UL 746E and what does this mean for conformal coating?

Underwriters Laboratory (UL) are a global safety certification body for consumer electronics.

UL 746E measures the ignition resistance of the conformal coating to electrical ignition sources. The conformal coating material’s resistance to ignition and surface tracking characteristics is described in UL 746E.

What is MIL-I-46058C and why is my conformal coating qualified to this standard?

The Mil Standard for conformal coating has been inactive for new designs since November 1998. However, the standard is still widely used for independent certification of conformal coatings. All companies tested to the Mil standard are listed on a Qualified Product List (QPL).

Conformal coatings listed on the QPL will have been through rigorous 3rd party testing.

Caution should be shown when examining conformal coating datasheets which state MEET the requirements of MIL-I-46058C since they conformal coatings will likely not have been tested by the independent laboratory.

What is UL-94 and how does it relate to conformal coating?

Underwriters Laboratory (UL) are a global safety certification body for consumer electronics.

UL 94, a test method from UL, measures conformal coating material’s tendency either to extinguish or to spread the flame once the test specimen has been ignited. This is now harmonized with IEC 60707, 60695-11-10 and 60695-11-20 and ISO 9772 and 9773.

What is the IPC CC830 Standard and how does it relate to conformal coating?

The IPC Standard, IPC-CC-830B Qualification and Performance of Electrical Insulating Compound for Printed Wiring Assemblies,  was originally written as an alternative to MIL-I-46058C and is used in conformal coating all over the world. The standard is used for qualifying conformal coating materials by suppliers and manufacturers of the products. The major difference between the IPC standard and the Mil standard is that the IPC standard is self-certification and not completed by independent means.

Are all conformal coatings compatible with selective conformal coating robot equipment?

The honest answer is yes but depends on what you mean by compatible? If you want an easy, low cost process then not all conformal coatings will give you this. You may have to spend a lot on capital and put strong process controls in to ensure the process works well. In fact, some materials can be a real pain without very specialist process equipment.

Contact SCH directly about what your Conformal Coating New Product Introduction and ensure you make the right choice on your material and process.

Why do I need a conformal coating support package? I already know what I need.

When conformal coating process goes wrong you want to know that you can answer most problems very quickly. This is difficult in today’s production environment as learning about niche processes like conformal coatings is time consuming. Normally, you have to learn the hard way by experience but this can be really costly!

For a very low investment, you can have technical support at the end of an email, telephone or if you require visit and have peace of mind that you have expertise there to help you.
