Shielding Medical Electronics from stray RFI / EMI signals can be life saving

The Medical Electronics Industry has to spend a lot of time ensuring their products do not fail due to cross talk from other electronic devices. Conductive Paints, varnishes that can screen signals from the source electronics, are widely used throughout the medical industry for this reason. Systems such as MRI and CAT scanners, de-fibrilators and ECG machines, as well as in body products such as artificial pace makers, can be coated in the protective coatings and ensure that no catastrophic failure can occur which leads to injury, misdiagnosis or death.

Can I bond to my polycarbonate casing with a conductive shielding paint?

A conductive coating like a nickel paint can bond easily in general to a material like polycarbonate if it is solvent based. If it is water based then it will need a solvent based primer coating before application. This defeats the purpose of a water based conductive paint so better to stick to solvent based shielding coatings.

How do I spray the EMI / RFI Shielding Coating?

Follow proper techniques as outlined by the gun manufacture. For best results, keep the gun-to-surface distance constant. Move the gun in a straight line along the surface, avoiding arcing motions. Use spray-and-release strokes to avoid excess paint in one spot. If possible, start and end each stroke off the surface.

To apply the required thickness
1. At the recommended distance, spray a thin and even coat onto the surface. Overlap the previous stroke by 50% to avoid gaps in coverage.
2. Before spraying another coat, wait 2 to 5 minutes (depending on the product specifications). The delay avoids trapping solvent between coats.
3. Apply additional coats until the desired thickness is achieved.
4. Let dry for 5 minutes (flash off time) at room temperature.

What does the surface resistivity value and method actually mean for RFI shielding coatings and is this the best method to assess the coating?

The “Ohm per square” unit is for sheet resistivity. It refers to the resistance of a film coating measured by electrodes placed at the surface of the coating. This is an industry standard method of presenting data for Shielding Paints. However, a better measurement is volume resistivity and customer trials.
